There is no dependable universal DTV processing time. The responsible mission, application volume, document quality, additional requests and interview requirements all affect the timeline.

Important

Mission requirements can change. Confirm the responsible mission and live official guidance immediately before submission and payment.

Use the responsible mission’s estimate

The London embassy currently recommends applying 6–8 weeks before departure and states a standard processing time of about 15 working days, with longer periods for additional documents or interviews. This is London guidance, not a worldwide promise.

Do not book around an estimate

Use refundable or changeable travel arrangements where possible. A submitted application does not guarantee approval, and some missions may cancel or delay a case if location requirements are not met.

Prevent avoidable delay

Submit complete, readable and consistent evidence. Monitor the official account and email for requests. Respond with exactly what was requested and preserve a copy of the submitted file.

Criminal record timing

After the August 2026 rule change, the time needed to obtain the correct criminal record clearance may become the longest part of preparation. Order it early while checking validity and translation rules for the mission.
